The mouth is a vital part of human body and overall physical health. Problems with teeth and gums should be given high priority when suffering from dental aches and discomfort. Instead of going to the verge of discomfort, educate yourself on proper oral hygiene.

Most people get up in the morning and brush their teeth for ‘fresh breath’ and ‘white teeth’. This type of thinking can lead to dental problems because serious brushing is required to avoid missing dental plaque and tartar build-up that contribute to teeth and gum diseases. Brushing your teeth is the most important activity to maintain your teeth. The main objective in following a good daily oral hygiene regime is to remove bacterial plaque from the teeth.

Poor oral hygiene can also lead to harmful diseases. Periodontitis, or gum disease, can increase the risk of cardiovascular problems and diabetes. It may also lead to COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and lung disease. It also can result in higher possibility of bone diseases.

A good oral health regime must include brushing twice daily, insuring cleaning all surfaces of the teeth. The back molars and the back of the lower front teeth are two areas that are usually missed or not brushed well so give these areas special attention. Brushing should be done in conjunction with flossing to remove plaque in areas between teeth. It is important to rinse the mouth after eating if you cannot brush the teeth immediately.

You should be aware that certain types of foods can contribute to tooth and gum problems and their consumption should be limited.

Avoid or reduce the use of:

  • Free sugars and other fermentable carbohydrates because they promote tooth decay.
  • Fruit juices which may not only contain sugar but also are corrosive to your tooth enamel
  • Soft drinks

Stay on top of your daily dental regime and pay close attention to your diet. Your health and well-being are better served by your natural teeth.
